Entertainment Speech
Defined: Entertainment Speeches are designed to captive the audience's attention while relaying an important message to them.
Main Goal: These types of speeches are meant to stir the audience's attention and emotions.
Entertainment speeches like informative and persuasive speeches should inform the audience of a clear message. However, entertainment speeches are mostly delivered during special occasions such as: a wedding, a graduation, a motivational speech, an acceptance speech and awards banquets. They can also be given at more everyday type events such as in a classroom setting where their primary goal is to amuse the audience and stimulate certain emotions. The majority of speeches you'll come across as a speaker will be the entertainment speech. When watching the television count how many entertainment speeches you notice on the Grammys, the Oscars, and even speeches given in movies.
Features of an Entertainment Speech:
-
Be prepared. Entertainment speeches can be falsely assumed as easy, but this type of speech requires just as much preparation as an informative or persuasive speech.
-
Consider the occasion and your audience. Not all entertainment speeches will be appropriate for every place and every person. Be sure you know the occasion you'll be speaking at so that your speech doesn't offend or upset anyone in the audience.
-
Be mindful of the time. Some entertainment speeches should be short in length such as a wedding toast or acceptance speech on live television at the Grammys. Other entertainment speeches can be longer in length such as a motivational speech. Just be clear on what your audience is expecting so that they won't get bored.
Entertainment topics may include:
-
A maid of honor or best-man speech
-
Speaking in front of a class about personal experiences (I did an entertainment speech on being open-minded about different cultures)
-
An acceptance speech for being the MVP or winner of a prestigious award
-
A motivational speech to people dealing with cancer, or another harmful disease
-
Comedy
My entertainment speech was about helping others understand and respect cultural differences. It was given during my Advanced Public Speaking course taught by Professor Carolyn Thompson.
